STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Dozens of veterans from World War II to Iraq were honored today by the Nicotra Group in Bloomfield, lauded for their bravery on the battle field, service to a grateful nation and loyalty to each other.

It marked the 12th annual Veterans Day commemoration by Richard and Lois Nicotra, whose Hilton Garden Inn serves as the overnight stop for newly inducted armed services personnel making their way through the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn.

"He was always very special to me," said Nicotra, who grew up in Westerleigh where veterans on the block formed a lasting impression on him as a boy. "He was the only person in the family who went to war."

It is with him in mind that Nicotra said he’s instructed his staff to give "red carpet treatment" to overnight MEPS guests.

"We have a love of veterans and MEPS at the Hilton," said Nicotra.
